Wirewalker by Del Mar Oceanographic is a vertical profiling system that enables the collection of time series of profiles for any variable compatible with the vehicle.

Wirewalker moves vertically along a cable using wave motion as its sole propulsion mechanism, meaning it does not require batteries. Instruments mounted on the vehicle may carry their own power sources or use external battery packs, either proprietary or supplied by manufacturer RBR.

It is an ideal vehicle for interdisciplinary applications, such as studies of biochemical, physicochemical and geobiological phenomena, among others. It is also well suited for acquiring data on water column microstructure, internal waves, limnological studies, algal blooms, assessments of aquaculture viability, desalination plants, and more.

Wirewalker travels along a weighted cable suspended from a surface buoy. It ascends by buoyancy and descends along the cable thanks to a cam mechanism actuated by the motion of the buoy induced by wave action. The average ascent/descent speed is on the order of 10 metres per minute.

Wirewalker can be moored to a fixed anchor or allowed to drift, functioning as a Lagrangian device. The profiling range extends from 1 metre below the surface down to a maximum of 500–1000 metres.

Following the acquisition of more than 500,000 profiles (over 18,000 km of vertical travel), the performance and reliability of Wirewalker are beyond doubt.
