WERA is the high-frequency radar system developed by Helzel Messtechnik GmbH. It is capable of providing real-time data on surface currents, significant wave direction and height, as well as wind speed and direction. To achieve this, it offers high spatial (250 m) and temporal (30 s–10 min) resolution, covering areas of more than 200 km.

The system delivers comprehensive mapping of the sea surface by extracting information from a grid of points to generate oceanographic time series and the directional wave spectrum for the monitored area.
