This velocimeter belongs to a special class of high-resolution 3D instruments. It is used for studying rapid velocity fluctuations in laboratory environments or in the ocean, with a very high sampling range.
The Nortek Vector measures velocities within a very small volume of water. It uses a single active central transducer and three receiving transducers arranged symmetrically around it. Two transducer configurations are available: a sensor head mounted on a rigid stem (directly connected to the instrument housing), or mounted at the end of a 1-metre-long cable.
The Vector can be operated in autonomous mode or in real-time. It can be synchronised with other units, allowing the entire system to be controlled from a PC. The maximum sampling rate is 64 Hz. Its most common applications include the study of surf zone dynamics, combined wave and current monitoring, turbulence around structures, and boundary layer studies.
