The D-Opto enables stable measurement of dissolved oxygen concentrations in liquids over long periods of time. It is a sensor with no consumable parts, as its measurement principle is based on fluorescence. It is available in three versions: the standard version (D-Opto sensor), a version with internal memory and batteries (D-Opto Logger), and a version with an automated shutter to prevent biofouling (D-Opto Shutter).
Unlike conventional oxygen sensors, the D-Opto measures dissolved oxygen concentration using fluorescence. A fluorescent compound (ruthenium) is excited with light at a constant wavelength. When the light source is removed, the ruthenium emits fluorescence, the intensity of which depends on the oxygen concentration in the surrounding water. Thanks to an extremely stable electronic circuit that controls both the excitation and the subsequent measurement of the emitted fluorescence, the D-Opto provides accurate dissolved oxygen measurements for many months without the need for recalibration.
Unlike traditional polarographic dissolved oxygen sensors, the optical method does not consume oxygen. As a result, the measurement is not affected by water movement. In addition, the sensor window is surrounded by copper, which helps prevent biofouling. In the D-Opto Shutter version, the window can be automatically closed between measurements, further reducing biological growth on the sensing surface.
The D-Opto also measures water temperature and is supplied in three versions:
– D-Opto sensor: ideal for integration into an existing measurement system and controlled by an external datalogger, with analogue or digital output
– D-Opto Logger: self-contained version with internal memory and batteries
– D-Opto Shutter: standard version equipped with an automated shutter to minimise biofouling
