Teledyne Webb Research’s APEX floats are autonomous drifting profilers used to measure oceanographic variables through vertical profiles down to depths of up to 2,000 metres. They are also used as Lagrangian tracers at a selected depth through successive surfacings. Data and position are transmitted via ARGOS or IRIDIUM. They typically carry CTDs and other sensors such as dissolved oxygen, fluorescence, and more.
With an expected service life of four years, the float surfaces at preprogrammed intervals (10 days is typical) to transmit data approximately 150 times from a predefined depth (maximum 2,000 metres).
