Measuring water flows with high temporal or spatial resolution makes it possible to undertake studies of boundary layers or turbulent regimes. Typical applications include sediment transport studies, surf-zone dynamics, orbital velocity analyses and the characterisation of turbulent flows. A powerful tool for high temporal resolution measurements is the acoustic Doppler velocimeters manufactured by Nortek A/S, which measure 3D flows within a small water volume at frequencies of up to 200 Hz. Micro-scale scalar fluxes can be studied using microturbulence probes manufactured by Rockland Scientific. The combined use of Nortek’s Vector with RS’s microSquid enables a detailed description of scalar variables associated with micro-scale dynamics. These instruments allow non-intrusive measurements both in the field (Vector) and in laboratory environments (Vectrino+). If your interest lies in high spatial resolution vertical measurements, Nortek HR profilers operating at 2 or 1 MHz can meet your requirements. Additionally, you may find it useful to review our instrument mounting solutions under the “Moorings” category or under the “INNOVA” manufacturer.
