The infrastructure required to deploy instrumentation is often the last aspect we consider. However, support, mounting and anchoring elements can be critical to the success of a costly marine measurement operation. In general, there are three basic options for installing measurement equipment at sea: on the seabed, in mid-water or at the surface. In terms of depth range, there are also three main possibilities: very shallow (within reach of divers), shallow (up to 200–300 metres) or deep water (measured in kilometres). Distance from the coast is a third factor to consider, as it affects the type of vessel required and any communication systems that may be needed, whether cabled or wireless.
