The measurement of marine currents has long been— and continues to be—one of the most extensively pursued areas in the history of oceanography. Since the 1980s, when Doppler technology was introduced for measuring currents in fluid environments, various manufacturers have developed a wide range of instruments tailored to different applications. Today, an extensive array of devices is available on the market for measuring currents and flows, based on acoustic (Doppler) methods, radar systems and classical approaches such as Lagrangian drifters.
